One Year after the murder of Andy Lopez, reggae artist based out of the Bay Area, Sky I, releases his latest single “Can’t blame The Youth”. A song inspired by the life and shooting of Andy Lopez, who was from the Mooreland neighborhood of Santa Rosa, CA. Andy tragically lost his life on October 22nd of 2013 to sheriff Erick Gelhaus, who shot him 7 times, in broad daylight, as he walked to a friend’s house carrying a toy gun. Sky I recalls a feeling of indignation from the injustice that was done against this 13 year old boy and his family, and so was moved to write this piece as a testament to the many youth who have fallen victim to police terror. Although the killing of Andy Lopez is the a story local to the North bay, the song echoes the reminder that so many communities across the U.S have mourned the loss of a youth as this systematic problem of police terror persists year after year. Listen with an open mind and remember that the youth come to this world blameless, and it is our responsibility to guide them and protect them.
lyrics
Can't Blame the Youth and what they do for fun
If they're in the street while holding a toy gun
Deputy sheriff came and shot him down
Illusion of the beast nearly loose ten rounds
Now mama cry echoes through the town
In an ocean of sorrow you can hear here drown
Crying why, oh why did they take his life?
